(eyeCandy) Reader Projects

I was super excited this week when 2 of you emailed me photos of projects you made with our tutorials!
I keep meaning to get a flickr group going but haven't yet....
But we LOVE to see your projects.
*****
I started an email conversation with Lydia, who is 14.  She was making the skirt part of the Three Part Harmony Dress.  I started sewing when I was 15, so it was awesome to see someone that young who likes to sew!

Here is her skirt:

I love how it turned out!  Isn't she so cute???
-------

The other project is from Brianna who made the Petal Dress!
It turned out PERFECT!
She made a size 6, using McCalls M6197 - A for the bodice, and changed the neckline.
She also made a 72" sash and wished it was longer...
She enlarged the petals 1/4" and used about 4 yards of material.

Here it is:

Gorgeous, Brianna!

If you make projects from our tutorials, we LOVE to see them.
Send pictures!

P.S. Autie is having her baby on Monday! YEA!

(iCandy) Shoe Makeover

So a couple of weeks ago I cleaned out my shoes.
I got rid of so many pairs that were just sitting there.
I had a pair of nude wedges that I wasn't in love with, and decided to get creative.  First off, I did not like the bows that were on top.

They were awkward and stuck out funny.
So I cut them off.
Underneath were two little holes where they attached.
Looking at those holes gave me the idea of a total shoe makeover:
I don't have any black wedges, and definitely could use some,
so I busted out some fabric paint and supplies and went to town!
I decided to make some cute bows to cover up those little holes.  Super easy, and if I get sick of the polka dots, I can whip up a new set!  Just slide them under the t-strap.

I thought it would be a 20 min project...but it actually took me much longer!
But I really like how they turned out.
Now what other shoes can I paint?

(tutorial) interchangeable birthday sign!

I've been looking forward to posting this project for a long time!  I'm so excited to finally have it done (it was a fast project, I've just had other things to do!)  Anyway, just in time for my Ivy's birthday on Sunday, I have another cupboard door project for you.
You remember my last cupboard door project {here}.
My Father in Law recently dropped off a whole slough of unused cupboard doors of all shapes and sizes.  And as you know I've been on the prowl for some more front door signs for my {post}
So, I thought I'd make a birthday sign to mark the birthday week of each of the people in our family.  It'll make them feel special for a whole week, right?
Everybody has their own little name plate, and when birthday week rolls around, we'll bust out the sign, and stick a new name on there!
Fun!

(iCandy) Happy Everything!

Costco was selling these amazing 3-tiered cupcake carriers forever ago.  One of those things I'm kicking myself for because I didn't buy one when it was at Costco, and so cheap. DANG!  But I've been pining over it for over a year now!  Do you remember them?
Well, I've been dying to do this idea I stole from my big sister:
I just stuck some happy {everything} vinyl onto both sides...it just makes something that's already super cute, cuter...right?  I have a crush on it!
I can't wait to take it to use for my t-ball treats this weekend!

(tutorial) Hint of Vintage Maxi Dress

Maybe I have been watching too much Downton Abbey (I love love love it) or maybe it was this Anthropologie Dress that caught my eye, but drop-waists have been on my mind.  For some reason, I am really drawn to the silhouette.  (I think for sure the late teens/20's versions, not the 80's!)  Not to mention, they are one of the top trends for Spring 2012.

So when I was thinking about what I wanted to sew this month, I sketched out this dress:

and with a couple of evenings of work, created this:

I made a mistake and it should be a couple of inches longer..
It's my new pajama dress! Yes, it is that comfortable...
I wanted it to be a more spring-y color, but I only had enough fabric in a few choices. This was the best of the lot...Maybe next time I will make one in a fun color!

(Giveaway) Pink Poodle Bows

I was so excited when Pink Poodle Bows contacted us to try out one of their patterns!  They have a ton of irresistible little girl dresses and rompers, and I would have chosen any one of those in a second, but I just kept returning my gaze to their series of E-readers.
If you recall, a little while ago, I did sew myself a 'Kindle Keeper' with the help of Melissa at the Polka Dot Chair.  It was covered with iron-on vinyl, and I really do love it...{check my kindle keeper out here}but I wanted to try out another pattern, and maybe make one for my mom for Mother's Day.  {with baby coming, I fee like I should be on top of these things, ya know?}I was anxious to try out the other format, as well...my first one was sort of a sleeve, and I thought it would be fun to make a 'book-like' one.
As easy as the tut was to make the original Kindle Keeper that I made, there were just a lot of steps, including ironing on the vinyl...and sewing on vinyl is tricky, so my stitches weren't perfect and pretty.
The Pink Poodle Bow's E-reader pattern was soooo simple and easy to follow.

Here are a couple of my favorite things that I liked about this pattern:  First of all, it doesn't matter if you have a Kindle, a Nook, a Kindle Touch, Fire, Kindle 4, Nook Color, Tablet, Touch...or even an iPad.  This pattern gives you measurements to fit any and all of those...and I'm sure I missed some.  Love that.  Just because I have a Kindle, doesn't mean that anyone that I want to make it for does, as well, so this is the perfect versatility pattern.
Second, I did not buy 1 single thing for this pattern (don't tell my mom).  I suppose I had left-over fusible fleece, but otherwise, I had all the stuff...the amount of fabric required is minimal.  I love it when I can make something out of stuff I already have!
Thirdly...Quick Project...Don't be fooled by the 18 pages.  It is indeed 18 pages to download the pattern/instructions, but that's because it's such a versatile pattern, as I mentioned before, and it's so nicely explained...you can't mess it up!
Giveaway Time!
Pink Poodle Bows has offered to give 1 of our readers a pattern of their choice!  Get excited!
here's what you need to do to win:
- follow iCandy (duh)
- head on over to Pink Poodle Bows etsy shop, check out all of their fun dresses and other e-reader (there are other styles than the one I picked...and they are equally as darling) patterns and come back and tell us what you'd choose if you won!
Please don't forget to leave us your email address in your comments so we can let you know if you won!
Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

(Sponsor Spotlight) Birdsong Bows

Get excited for a new unique iCandy sponsor!  I was thrilled to look around the Birdsong Bows site and see the fun and unique patterns and products that she offers!
The first item that caught my eye was this fun and funky Ribbon Star Pendant or Ornament.  Wear it as a necklace, with the smaller size, or use it as an ornament with larger size ribbon.  Imagine the possibilities with different colored striped ribbon..no two will be alike!  (pretty sure my daughter would LOVE to sport one of these necklaces everyday!)

I also loved the idea of these darling  headbands...This is the Catherine Headband, and is a mixture of Gardenias and Ruched Flowers...made from ribbon, mind you.  so cute, and original!
and this showy flower made me think of my friend who keeps borrowing my daughter's red felt flower hair clippy.  I must make one of these for her, because I know it will be appreciated...and to me, it looks like something a grown up could wear...or put on a purse, or bag, or whatever...
She has lots more e-patterns on her site such as ones below...DARLING!, and they are all in PDF format, so easy to print out use!  They come chock full of pictures for each pattern, and step-by-step instructions.
Please visit Birdsong Bows at their {etsy shop}

(tutorial) Curling Circles Skirt

This skirt started out as an experiment in technique, and I think I really like how it turned out.

I have a serious need for more skirts in my wardrobe...well ones that I like anyway...so I thought I would start out with a skirt that is practical, yet whimsical.

I found this durable cotton knit fabric at a thrift store a while back, and it worked absolutely perfect for this project.  You can't go wrong with navy blue, either!

The trim is MANY MANY circles cut out and sewn on.  They curl into themselves.
A bit tedious to sew, but quite an easy project!
The skirt itself was a piece of cake.  With Delia's tutorial as a guide (minus the prego parts) I just
traced an existing straight skirt up to the waistline, and cut out identical front and back pieces for the
skirt.  Then I measured the lower part of my waist (where I wanted the skirt to hit) and took off a couple inches for stretch.  Then I made a 2" wide yoga waistband and sewed it on! (I wish I had made it a little bit smaller...)
Hemmed it and done.

....Then the work starts.
